The Policy Consequences of Laws Against Same-Sex Marriage in the United States
by Professor Susan Mezey (Department of Political Science - Loyola University Chicago)
Susan Mezey will focus on policies restricting same-sex marriage in the United States, especially the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).
The consequence of this law is to prevent same-sex couples from receiving federal financial benefits (that heterosexual married couples receive) or having their marriages recognized in other states. She will discuss the way it is being challenged in several courts and will include a discussion of the role of courts in making policy for same-sex couples.
Registration free of charge before May 6th 2011 by e-mail
Food (including vegetarian) and drinks will be provided.
