The Chair Casterman-Hamers answers the need for a cross-disciplinary and university-wide education in the History and Philosophy of Sciences by means of annual series of invited lectures.
The kick-off of the Chair is done by VUB-honorary doctor Londa Schiebinger, John L. Hinds Professor of History of Science in the History Department at Stanford University and Director of the EU/US Gendered Innovations in Science, Health & Medicine, Engineering, and Environment Project.
Participation is FREE, but registration is mandatory

19.15-20.00 : Lecture by Londa Schiebinger : The Gender Politics of Plants in the Eighteenth-Century Atlantic World

Historic lecture on exotic abortifacients. The lecture looks at the influence of colonial science and introduces the term agnotology - the study of culturally induced ignorance or doubt, particularly the publication of inaccurate or misleading scientific data
