We often hear about the Philippines and Mexico regarding repression of the social movements. In the Philippines, extra-judicial murders of numerous activists are common practice. How will the country evolve after Rodrigo Duterte's accession to power, who seems to lend a hand to social movements and in addition is giving the police the extensive power to "shoot-to-kill"? In Mexico, a war of low intensity against indigenous communities and more specifically against the famous Zapatista movement has been led for decades. The repression also extends to other population groups as the recent massacre of students in Ayotzinapa demonstrates.
What therefore are the possible recourses for social movements when repression seems to be institutionalized? From Mexico to the Philippines, there are many commonalities of the repression methods. Shall we avoid conspiracy theories or face reality?
We will discuss these points with Quinoa's two partners who have been working in the field for several years.
This conference is organized as part of the welcoming of our partners from the South and guest speakers : PABLO ALEJANDRO RAMIREZ, defensor of Human Right, administrator of FRAYBA, partner of Quinoa in Mexico and BEN RAMOS , president of Peace & Developmentpartener NGO and partner of Quinoa in Philipinnes
